Written by Amy Myers, MD

This easy-to-make, comforting, and delicious smoothie recipe tastes like everyone’s favorite holiday dessert. That’s right, it tastes just like apple pie! No need to reach for another slice of apple pie with all its typical unhealthy ingredients. This combination of crisp apples and fall-favorite spices makes this Apple Pie Smoothie taste just like homemade pie.

It gets even better since all the ingredients are The Myers Way® approved. If you decide to have this smoothie for breakfast, dessert, and as a snack, I wouldn’t blame you! You also get the added bonus of collagen and protein from my seasonal Salted Caramel Protein Powder. These nutrients deliver health benefits so you can keep going all day and feeling better than ever. Let’s get into it!

Apple Picking Season

Ingredients for the Apple Pie Smoothie - Amy Myers MD®

Ah, apples. These classic, tasteful fruits grow in abundance in wild and commercial apple orchards. If you enjoy apple picking season, you know how delightful it is to walk among the trees, take in all the sights and sounds, and smell those delicious apples! It’s also fun to find the best ones for all your homemade holiday baked goods.

This Apple Pie Smoothie is a great way to incorporate your apples into a healthy, satisfying snack. When choosing the best apples, consider the flavor profile you want. After all, apples come in a variety of sizes, flavors, and textures. As for their many health benefits, apples are an excellent source of vitamin C. Your body needs an adequate supply to support healthy immune function during the colder months. Vitamin C is also important for healthy gums and teeth! You’ll also find trace amounts of copper, vitamin K, and potassium for healthy cellular function. Apples also contain fiber for optimal digestion. Since gut health ties so closely to mood and immune function, it’s easy to see why eating apples can make you both happy and healthy!

For easy blending, be sure to add all your liquids first. This helps prevent clumping and makes it easier to blend. You can also chop your apples up into smaller pieces if you like. If you’re using a high-powered blender, you may not need to do this. Should you leave the skins on? Since I recommend only using fresh, organic apples for this recipe, it’s not necessary to peel them first. Besides, the skin adds extra fiber!

Coconut Butter

Paleo protein and Apple Pie smoothie mixture - Amy Myers MD®

This recipe uses coconut butter in place of traditional nut butter. Many recipes suggest adding a spoonful of nut butter for extra nutrients. However, those following The Myers Way should avoid nuts and seeds due to their high omega-6 and phytate content. Phytates can block your body’s ability to absorb critical minerals like zinc, magnesium, and iron. They’re also high on the allergy list, which can irritate your gut and immune system. Coconut butter is a superb alternative made from coconuts!

How exactly is coconut butter made? Also known as creamed coconut, coconut butter is a creamy, coconut spread made from dehydrated, unsweetened coconut pulp. The pulp is then ground into a semi-solid white block that you can store at room temperature. Coconut butter carries many of the same health benefits as coconut oil. This means it can help boost your metabolism, support healthy energy levels, and may even curb cravings! If you’re trying to balance your blood sugar or lose weight, these are especially helpful.

Apple Pie Spice

What makes this Apple Pie Smoothie taste so much like the original? Well, part of it comes from the signature spice blend it uses. Hints of nutmeg intertwined with cinnamon lace this smoothie with warming notes of aromatic spices. Nutmeg is a spice that originates from Indonesia. Known for its unique flavoring, nutmeg also offers impressive health benefits. For example, nutmeg contains antioxidants that help your body fight against free radical damage. It also contains folate, thiamine, and manganese.

Cinnamon is another versatile spice with loads of health benefits. Full of antioxidants and beneficial compounds, cinnamon can help balance blood glucose levels, protect heart health, and rev up a sluggish metabolism. It may even help ward off bacterial, fungal, or viral infections.

Salted Caramel Protein Powder
