We’ve reached the point in society where we purchase one million plastic bottles every minute. Of those,  91% are not recycled. These bottles also require more than 17 million barrels of oil to produce the yearly numbers required. And, despite recycling programs, billions and billions of plastic bottles end up in a landfill, where they sit for approximately 400 years before they decompose. For this reason, I encourage all of my patients to drink out of glass or stainless steel containers.

I further recommend avoiding plastic water bottles due to toxins like Bisphenol A (BPA), which has been shown to imitate estrogen and other hormones in the body. Plus, when you add hot liquids to a plastic bottle, while it won’t melt, it does open up the pores to allow chemicals to leach into your drink. Even ones marked “microwave safe” only means that the bottle won’t melt, not that it’s actually “safe”.

How do I clean my shaker bottle?
